Hole in One Insurance

From Mike Redmerski, Tournament Director:

As your tournament director I was tasked with trying to explain our Hole in One Insurance policy to our members at large. First and foremost this is something voluntary we offer to anyone who participates in a Lakewood Men’s Golf Club sponsored event. This can be a monthly tournament or any one of the special events we play in throughout the year, for example, team play or a bus trip, challenge cup and so on as long as it is a sponsored event. You may ask yourself why I would want to donate $2 to a hole in one insurance fund. If you never had the thrill of a hole in one let me tell you by experience that you go to another planet. What brings you back to earth is the fact that in golf there is a tradition that the person getting the hole in one buys his fellow golfers a round in the pub. This is fine if you are only playing your friendly weekend match with your buds, but what about getting one where we have 150 players playing? The tab can be quite high so by getting hole in one insurance you are actually covering a big portion of the bar tab. My hole in one in 2000 was in a little tournament with 36 guys who loved to drink beer on the course and Cadillac margaritas after the round. Needless to say I got a bar tab for $235 that day. Was it worth it? Oh, yeah. Do I wish this club had hole in one insurance? Without a doubt. $2 dollar donation: priceless. It can happen to anyone.

With that, here are the particulars of LMGC Hole in One Insurance:

  • Cost is a one-time premium of $2, which provides coverage until someone in the Hole in One fund gets an ace. After that, a new $2 premium is required to have insurance.

  • The total amount in the fund will go to the lucky/skillful player to offset some (or maybe even all) of his bar tab.

  • If the fund is less than $250, the Club will top-off the fund to a minimum amount of $250.

  • Note that this is a hole in one insurance fund, not a hole in one prize fund. You are buying insurance to offset a big bar tab, not getting in on another side pot to reward your skill.
